Special Benefit performance in aid of the Performing Arts Lodge Collective Creates The Museum Project A group of local actors, inspired by American acting guru, Larry Moss, have created a show from one of Moss' exercises. The result, The Museum Project, runs May 14 through May 24 atHavana. While walking through an art gallery in New York, co-producer Dawn Henderson felt a flash of inspiration. "I remembered doing this exercise in acting class," she says. "Everybody has a story to tell. Everybody. That can be expressed through a painting or a piece of music--at any moment inspiration can strike to give breath and life to a character, one that nobody otherwise would've thought to tell. We are animating paintings, letting them tell their stories. " The Museum Project consists of 11 pieces, each 5-10 minutes long. The pieces are inspired by various paintings, from Edward Munch's The Scream to Picassos' The Kiss, to Delacroix's Orphan Girl In A Cemetery, to Matisse's Woman Before an Aquarium, to Kahlo's The Two Fredas. To tie it all together, the show is being directed by Leo-Award winner, Nathaniel Deveaux, and the cast includes many well-known Vancouver stage and screen actors, including Sian Bergen, Johnny Gingell, Dawn Henderson, Paul Herbert, Kurtis Maguire, Henry J. Mah, Kasey R. Mazak, Urszula Petrykowska, Diana Squires, Drew Taylor, and Lori Watt. The Museum Exercise, taken from Larry Moss' book, The Intent to Live, consists of visiting a museum or a gallery, and looking at paintings until "you come upon a painting that that rivets you and calls to you... The objective of this exercise is to play that character and create a story for them." The result essentially brings the painting to life. The Museum Project, produced Dawn Henderson and Lori Watt and conceived by Nathaniel Deveaux for Dive In! Productions, runs May 14-17, and May 21-24, 2008, 8 pm at Havana, 1212 Commercial Drive. Tickets are $20, and part of the proceeds go to benefit the Performing Arts Lodge. Tickets are available through Tickets Tonight (www.ticketstonight.ca). A limited number of tickets may also be available at the door. There will also be a Special Benefit Performance at the Performing Arts Lodge, May 25th at 2 pm, where all proceeds from the $25 ticket price will go to the PAL centre. More info? click here. |
