Six Good Reasons
To Become A Member of PAL Vancouver

1. We make things happen.
Highlights of PAL's history include:

  • April 21, 2001: founding meeting and election of Steering Committee.
  • January - March 2002: PAL Vancouver incorporated as non-profit society by Province of B.C. and founding Board of Directors elected.
  • November 7, 2002: City of Vancouver awards PAL Vancouver the right to develop the Bayshore Social Housing Site providing fundraising deadlines are met on January 31 and April 30, 2003.
  • March 27, 2003: Vancouver City Council votes to approve the revised Performing Arts Lodge (PAL) Vancovuer proposal for the Bayshore Gardens affordable housing.
  • March 25, 2004: Vancouver City Council gives final approval to PAL for the development and lease of the affordable houseing site at Bayshore Gardens.
  • July 28, 2004: PAL Celebration of Construction held at the Bayshore Hotel.
  • May 29, 2006: The first residents move in!

2. We are fulfilling an important need in the Performing Arts Community.
Seniors in the performing arts earn an average annual income of $10,000, half the average annual income of people over the age of 65 in Vancouver.  The elimination of federal and provincial housing support has resulted in an acute shortage of affordable housing for lower income workers, particularly those seniors who have spent their life in the performing arts.  PAL considers these pioneers a priority for PAL non-market housing since the erratic employment and overall low income endemic within the performing arts industry has prevented many from establishing sufficient pensions or retirement funds on which to draw in later years. To address this situation, PAL Vancouver has built a Performing Arts Lodge in our community to provide senior members of the performing arts community with a safe and secure home in an affordable and supportive environment.

3. We are pioneers.
While modeled on the successful PAL Place in Toronto, PAL Vancouver is significantly different and is establishing an unprecedented model for future developments across the country.  Our building is the first to be funded outside of the envelope of Government funding and includes a flexible 100 seat theatre and other amenities to support residents’ creativity, well-being, health, mental fitness and energy for life.

4. We're fiscally responsible.
PAL Vancouver strives to keep administrative costs for the Association as low as possible. PAL Vancouver is able to reduce its operating expenses through ongoing donations of goods and services such as office and meeting space, computer equipment, and database and website design and maintenance.

5. You’ll be working with the best.
PAL’s patrons, board members, advisors and volunteers represent the business, arts and professional communities of Vancouver. We have built a strong network of experts who assist with much of the organization’s work – including marketing and public relations, fundraising, membership, legal, accounting, and special events.

6. It’s satisfying and fun!
PAL Vancouver is small, accessible and grassroots.
Board members and volunteers have a direct impact on the success of our projects. Through our contributions we are establishing concrete proof of the respect, gratitude and pride that Vancouver holds for its performing arts pioneers.

PAL Vancouver is proud to be part of a growing network of Performing Arts Lodge chapters across Canada, including PAL Canada, PAL Halifax, PAL Toronto, PAL Stratford and PAL Calgary.
